WHY DID I MOVE FROM SINGAPORE TO CANADA?

Singapore is a dream destination for many, known as one of the top progressive countries, not just in Asia, but globally. Although it's also one of the most expensive cities, but it's considered one of the safest places to live. Given its strong economy, one job can provide a better quality of life. I have lived in this beautiful country for more than half of my life. It's where I shaped my adult life and spent my teenage years, creating a second family and a close-knit group of friends. I spent nearly 16 comfortable years here, where I could afford all my needs, including some of my wants. So, why did I decide to move to another city? This is my migration story.
When you enter your thirties, you often find yourself asking, "Where am I going? What will my future be like? Why do I feel like I'm not making any progress?" These questions have been on my mind since 2019, but they've had a different impact on me this year, in 2023. I would say that a quarter-life crisis has significantly influenced the decisions I've made.
If someone were to ask me, "Why Canada? Why not pursue your career in Singapore? It's close to the Philippines, where you can return whenever you want, and, most importantly, you have a stable career and a comfortable life." From someone else's perspective, moving to Canada might seem like a big mistake. Imagine starting over from scratch, spending all your savings, and living in a place where you don't know anyone. If you were to ask me, I'd say that long-term plans have become a crucial matter in my life right now.
There's no doubt that Singapore is one of the best cities to live in, but I would say, it's a great place to live "temporarily." If you're a Permanent Resident or a Citizen, you can consider yourself lucky. However, for those of us who hold only a work permit and continually worry about whether the company will be able to renew it due to the changing government policies, this kind of life is just temporary.
I believe that many people in a situation similar to mine would agree that Singapore can serve as a stepping stone toward achieving long-term goals and plans. As a work permit holder, you are limited in many ways. You cannot pursue your passions while working for your employer because you are not allowed to engage in other businesses apart from your job. I'm deeply passionate about the things I love, and it's disheartening not to be able to pursue them all at once. Personally, I had several reasons for leaving Singapore, and this was one of them.
Should I claim that I can achieve everything I expect and plan with the snap of a finger? Of course not, no one would. I understand that such accomplishments take time and effort. I have mentally, emotionally, morally, and, most importantly, financially prepared myself for this transition. I realize that life will be more challenging, especially when you leave your loved ones behind; but you won't grow if you remain in your comfort zone; no one will.
I didn't have high expectations when I moved here, but one thing gives me hope: the opportunity to see what I couldn't in the past 16 years—a future I longed for, a passion and dream I couldn't pursue due to my status limitations. One important thing I brought with me when moving here is hope. There will be tough times when you don't know how to continue the fight, but as long as you believe there's still hope, you'll have a reason to keep going.
This will be a long and challenging journey, but I believe that one day it will all make sense and be worth it. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. If you feel you are not growing, look for a better place — there will always be one. Cheers to all CADreamers who are still waiting for a sign to apply or for their approval. It will never too late! <3
